5 Types of Utility Line Strikes Every Construction Professional Should Know About

Underground utility strikes are one of the construction industry’s most preventable and costly hazards. A single excavator bucket can damage a utility in seconds, resulting in project delays, expensive repairs, service disruptions, environmental damage, serious injuries or even fatalities. 

While some utility strikes are relatively minor, others can become major incidents. The key is understanding that the most common, most dangerous and most expensive strikes aren’t necessarily the same thing. Here are five types every construction professional should be aware of. 

1. Natural Gas: One of the Most Dangerous Strikes 

Natural gas lines should be near the top of every contractor’s risk list. A damaged gas line can release gas into an excavation or surrounding soil, creating a potentially explosive atmosphere. If the gas encounters an ignition source, the result can be a fire, explosion, property damage or serious injury. 

Gas strikes can also trigger evacuations, road closures, emergency response and significant project delays. In Ontario, contractors are required to locate underground utilities before excavation, and additional precautions may be necessary when working around gas infrastructure. 

Risk profile: High frequency, extreme danger, and potentially very high costs. 

2. Electrical: The Strike That Can Kill 

Underground electrical infrastructure presents an immediate life-safety hazard. Contact with an energized electrical cable can result in electrocution, arc flash, severe burns, equipment damage or fire. 

The danger extends beyond the person operating the excavator. Electricity can travel through equipment and the surrounding ground, putting other workers in the area at risk. 

Electrical strikes can also cause widespread outages and damage expensive infrastructure. Even when nobody is injured, restoring power and repairing the network can be a significant undertaking. 

Risk profile: Common, extreme danger, and potentially very expensive. 

3. Fiber Optic and Telecom: The Most Common May Not Look the Most Serious 

Fiber optic and telecommunications strikes may not have the immediate physical danger associated with gas or electrical lines, but they are among the most common types of utility damage. 

A cut residential fiber line might affect only one customer. However, striking a major telecommunications cable can disrupt internet, cellular or business communications for thousands of customers. For businesses that depend on continuous connectivity, the resulting downtime can become extremely expensive. 

This is a good example of why the physical cost of repairing a utility doesn’t always reflect the total cost of the incident. 

Risk profile: Very common, generally low immediate danger, but potentially high financial impact. 

4. Water: The Strike That Can Quickly Become a Flood 

Water-main strikes are another common excavation incident. Damaging a pressurized water line can release enormous volumes of water into an excavation, roadway or nearby property. 

The consequences can include flooding, erosion, road damage, basement flooding, loss of water service and damage to other utilities. Large transmission mains can turn a seemingly routine excavation mistake into a major infrastructure incident. 

Water strikes can also create secondary problems. Flooding may undermine surrounding soil or expose other utilities, potentially turning one damaged line into several infrastructure failures. 

Risk profile: Very common, moderate-to-high potential damage, and potentially expensive. 

5. Sewer and Stormwater: The Hidden Cost of Underground Damage 

Sewer and stormwater infrastructure can be easy to overlook because the consequences aren’t always immediately visible. A damaged sewer may continue functioning temporarily before a blockage, collapse or backup occurs. Similarly, damage to a stormwater pipe might not become apparent until the next major rainfall. 

Repairs can involve excavation, environmental cleanup, road reconstruction and restoration of affected properties or infrastructure. A damaged sewer can also create contamination and public-health concerns. 

Risk profile: Common, generally lower immediate danger, but potentially significant repair and environmental costs. 

What Is the Most Common, Dangerous and Expensive? 

There isn’t one utility that wins every category. Telecommunications, water and sewer infrastructure are among the most frequently encountered sources of utility damage, while natural gas and electrical strikes represent some of the greatest immediate threats to worker safety. 

When it comes to cost, the answer is even less straightforward. A damaged pipe or cable might cost relatively little to repair, but the total incident can become extremely expensive once emergency response, traffic disruption, environmental remediation, business interruption, property damage and project delays are included. 

That is why utility strikes should be viewed as more than a repair expense. They are a safety, schedule, financial and liability risk. 

The best way to manage that risk is simple: know what is underground before breaking ground, understand the limitations of utility locates, account for private utilities, and treat every unidentified line as a potential hazard until its location and contents are confirmed.
